Social revolution at Adupo

I’ve been a bit neglectful of the blog in the last few weeks so I think it’s about time I added an update.

After the initial burst of sales when we relaunched the site with the new design, things have slowed down a bit. Which is just as well really as Amanda has been pretty busy recently launching a couple of new stores in Canada. So I’ve decided to experiment with some online marketing of the site for the first time.

This site is a cross between a hobby and charity work for me, all the money from product sales goes directly to the suppliers in Kenya. So sometimes it’s hard to find enough hours in the day to get everything done. But I think I’ve come across a compromise. I’m going to be doing a lot more social media work in my new job so I’m going to be using Adupo as a testing ground.

And the first part of that is experimenting with Facebook advertising. I decided to start with a small budget of £5 per day for a couple of days. On a positive note, we’ve now got over 30 new members that we wouldn’t have got otherwise who chose to like the page. All I need is for one or two of those new members to make a sale and that will be £15 well spent.

Other than that, I plan to build the audience even further by inviting friends to like the page as well as previous customers. I’ll also ask for referrals and I’ll ask Amanda and Alison from our charity partner AViF to promote it to their extensive networks also.

I’ll aim to post various types of content to the page at least 5 times a week, ranging from blog posts like this one to featured products to discussion topics etc.

On a related note, I had an SEO company doing some link building for me for a couple of months to see how it could improve our Google rank for terms such as ‘ethical shopping’ and ‘gifts from Kenya’  but I’ve cancelled it due to disappointing results. From what I hear, the big G is far more interested in social proof these days so hopefully these efforts will give us a boost.

That’s it for this week, feel free to comment if you have any questions.
